Wednesday 13, Electric Ballroom

Friday 03 April 2009

Support:
Glamour Of The Kill
The Chelsea Smiles

The venue was the Electric Ballroom, Camden Town. The crowd had been queueing since 11am on the packed high street, and when the doors were finally opened at 7pm they rushed forward, eager to claim places at the front of the barrier. The first band, The Chelsea Smiles, took to the stage shortly after 7 due to the early curfew for the Inferno club night. Unfortunately this meant that they started off playing to about 60 people and the majority of the crowd missed the beginning of their set (myself included). However they quickly won over the slowly increasing crowd and by their final song they had half the room jumping about. Their american brand of hard rock was perfectly suited to the audience and they were clearly enjoying themselves.

The next band up were Glamour of the Kill, an English band who had joined Wednesday 13 for most of their UK tour. Again they went down very well with the crowd who by the end of the set had all joined in for a scream-a-long to a cover of ‘Dead, Jail, or Rock and Roll’, and ended up attracting a few stragglers from the bar to see what all the fuss was about.

Come 9pm the Electric Ballroom was full with excited fans waiting for the band they had come to see. The stage lights dimmed and amidst dramatic music the band members of Wednesday 13 strode purposefully onstage, with the lead singer and namesake earning the loudest scream of adoration. Their painted faces, matching those of the audience, and electric stage presence made for a hugely entertaining show. They stormed through a set which although hampered by the early curfew, was none-the-less packed with what the crowd wanted to hear. Including hits from the back catalogue of the band itself and from Murderdolls and Frankenstein Drag Queens, there was something to please everyone. When they finally exited the stage at 10pm after a menacing version of ‘I Love To Say F##k’, the crowd were left sweaty and exhausted, but knowing they had had an unforgettable time.
